MOLINE, Ill. – Tristan King and Justin Kovacs scored in the shootout for the host Quad City Mallards after Matt Pohlkamp tied the game in the third period for the Mallards (4-3-0), who overcame the Indy Fuel (2-3-2) 4-3 in the shootout Friday night.
The Mallards went 2-for-2 in the shootout while goaltender Ivan Kulbakov foiled both Indy shootout chances.
Pohlkamp knotted the score at three by blasting the puck in from the top of the left wing circle at 6:28 of the third.
The Mallards found themselves in need of a comeback when Cam Reid gave the Fuel a 3-2 lead with just six tenths of a second left in the second period. Reid scored from the top of the right wing circle one minute and 58 seconds after Matt Rupert evened the score from the slot for Indy.
The Mallards twice grabbed the lead earlier in the game. Alex Globke’s tip-in snapped a 1-1 deadlock at 14:08 of the second. The Mallards were on the power play when Sam Warning streaked down the slot to open the scoring at 2:30 of the first period, but that advantage last only two minutes and three seconds before Nick Bligh replied for the Fuel on a 2-on-1 rush.
The Mallards return to action on the road tomorrow night against the Fort Wayne Komets. The Mallards next play at home next Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. against the Adirondack Thunder.
