RAPID CITY, SD – Justin Kovacs scored two goals and added an assist as the Quad City Mallards (2-2-0) claimed a 4-1 victory and completed a two-game weekend sweep of the host Rapid City Rush (0-4-0) Saturday night.
Kovacs gave the Mallards a 1-0 lead just three minutes and 43 seconds into the game when he buried the rebound after Rapid City goaltender Kent Patterson saved Kovacs’ initial bid.
At 6:30 of the second period it was Alex Petan who jammed in a rebound after his first shot was stopped by Patterson. Petan would later add an assist
Rapid City’s Lindsay Sparks cut the gap to 2-1 with a spin-o-rama shorthanded goal just 26 second into the third period, but the Mallards would put the game away with two third period goals of their own. Donnie Harris reestablished the two-goal Mallard lead by roofing the puck from the right wing circle at 7:21 and Kovacs capped off a banner evening with at close range goal at 12:11.
The win was the second in as many nights at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center for the Mallards, who started the weekend by defeating the Rush 3-2 on Friday night.
The Mallards next play at home next Wednesday night against the Missouri Mavericks. That game and all Mallards Wednesday night home games this season will face off at the special early start time of 6:35 p.m.
