In Anaheim, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Jeff Carter and Evgeni Malkin hit for a pair of goals each in a 4-1 win over the Ducks on Tuesday night.
It was Malkin’s first game back this season, after surgery recovery.
“Coach (Mike Sullivan) told me before the game to play short, play simple and you’ll be fine. I tried to do it,” Malkin said. “Just happy the first game is done. We win and just keep going.”
Tristan Jarry made 25 saves in the Pens win.
“You see every day in practice how good ‘Geno’ is and how good their line is,” Jarry said. “I think it showed tonight, just the type of players (Malkin and Carter) are. They bring it every night, and just having ‘Geno’ back makes our team better.”
The Penguins improved to 21-9-5.
“To have [Malkin] in our lineup makes us that much better and especially on the power play,” Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang said. “He’s such a threat with his shot and his vision, so it’s good to have him back.”
Jakob Silfverberg was the lone striker for the Ducks.
“A few too many times, we turned the puck over and they came back at us,” Silfverberg said.
Anaheim dropped to 19-13-7.
“We were playing slow, especially the first two periods,” Silfverberg said. “Our ‘D,’ when they got to the puck, they didn’t really have any options. Before you know it, they pinned us in.”
Anthony Stolarz made 30 saves in the Ducks loss.
