Makrov looks to help Tigers move up ladder

Andrei Makrov has pledged to help Telford Tigers make a late impact on this season’s English Premier League title race.

The 36-year-old forward was unveiled as Telford’s fifth import on Thursday night, after narrowly beating the EPL transfer deadline.

The Estonian international has already joined the Tigers squad for this weekend’s games against Hull and Milton Keynes, as they look to regain ground on league leaders Basingstoke.

He said: “When I first spoke with Tom and the people here in Telford, I read about ice hockey in the UK and watched some films of the league.makrov2

“It is a good standard, and I’ve played against some of the Great Britain guys at the world championships. I know how good they can be.

“My main aim is to do as well as I can here in Telford, then hopefully we’ll win as much as possible this season.

“Of course, I want to score a lot of goals and help the team do that as well. It is very exciting for me.

“I want to make sure the guys here finish near, or at the top of the table.”

In 79 World Championship games with Estonia, Makrov has scored 69 goals and collected 40 assists – a record for his country

Makrov, who arrived in the UK from HK Almaty in Kazakhstan, spent the majority of his career playing in Russia, Belarus and Slovenia.

Tigers head coach, Tom Watkins, said: “I’ve spoken to a lot of people about Andrei and he’s an experienced professional who has been around the game for a long time.

“He’ll create some energy and buzz around the fans, so they can make a bit more noise about him. Andrei will be a quality player in this league and make a big difference for us.”

The Tigers’ clash with Milton Keynes Lightning, at Telford Ice Rink on Sunday, faces off at 6pm. For tickets, go to www.tigershockeyuk.com.
