Crickets and tumbleweeds have replaced cash and ink blowing in the wind on the NHL frontier.
Precious little has happened to the remaining free agents. Sure, they will be signed by the time training camps open but each that day passes means their stock drops a little more especially when teams are locking up restricted free agents now.
Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche is a case in point. On Friday, the Avs resigned the centerman to a seven-year, $44.1 million deal.
So, July 1st was not the only day for $6million annual deals then.
“Signing Nathan to a long-term contract was a priority this offseason,” Avs general manager Joe Sakic, said on NHL.com. “He is going to be a key part of our team for many years to come and it was important to secure his rights moving forward.”
The 20-year old MacKinnon scored 21 goals and 52 points this past season with Gabriel Landeskog and Matt Duchene as wingers.
The issue going forward is those two have been rumored to part of trade deals.
And the Columbus Blue Jackets have yet to ink a significant contract in eight plus days.
