Maatta signs 2-year, $6 million contract with Red Wings

Olli Maatta signed a two-year, $6 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. It has an average annual value of $3 million.

The defenseman has 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) and is averaging 18:11 of ice time in 49 games this season.

Maatta had signed a one-year, $2.25 million contract on July 14 and the 28-year-old could have become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

The Red Wings (25-20-8), who have won four straight games, play at the Calgary Flames on Thursday (9 p.m. ET; SNW, BSDET, ESPN+, SN NOW). They are four points behind the Washington Capitals for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.

Selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round (No. 22) of the 2012 NHL Draft, Maatta has 153 points (35 goals, 118 assists) in 583 NHL games with the Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks and Penguins. He also has 27 points (five goals, 22 assists) in 85 playoff games, and helped the Penguins win the Cup in 2016 and 2017.
