Lyons, Red Wings shut out New Jersey, 4-0 Lyons faces only 16 shots in win

In Detroit, the Red Wings scored three times in the first period in a 4-0 shutout over the visiting New Jersey Devils.

Alex Lyon needed to make just 16 saves in the shutout win.

“There’s definitely a skill to be ready when you aren’t playing,” Lyons said. “I’ve been in this role before, and I know you have to be ready for every opportunity. The guys played great in front of me, and it means everything that they have such confidence in me.”

Detroit improved to 9-6-3.

“Obviously, I’m thrilled with the way we played defensively, and Alex was great when we needed him,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “We had great energy coming home from a long road trip.”

The Red Wings scored three times in the final minutes of the first frame with Lucas Raymond giving the Wings a 1-0 lead with three minutes left.

Dylan Larkin made it 2-0 just 20 seconds later off a turnover.

“I turned the puck over twice and they went down and scored both times,” the Devils’ Tyler Toffoli said. “I’m very disappointed in myself and my game tonight. It definitely wasn’t good enough.”

New Jersey dropped to 8-8-1.

“They wanted this a lot more than we did,” New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff said. “They outskated us and outcompeted us. At the end of the night, we got exactly what we deserved.”

Another 52 seconds elapsed before Robby Fabbri scored for a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Moritz Seider hit off the power play midway through the middle frame for the 4-0 final.

“We got the three goals in the first, which was important, but we also went out and won the second period,” Lalonde said. “After that, we were able to just let the third period play out.”

Vitek Vanecek made 24 saves in the loss.
