In Detroit, Alex Lyon made 30 saves for the Red Wings in a 3-0 shut out of the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night.
“That was a very quiet game, and that’s what he has been giving us,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “He doesn’t give up rebounds, he gets whistles and he makes the right plays when he handles the puck. He takes away a lot of the chaos.”
Detroit improved to 25-18-5.
All the scoring happened in the middle frame.
After a scoreless first period, Dylan Larkin broke the ice at 1:37 of the second to stake the Red Wings to all the offense they needed in a 1-0 lead.
“We had a lot of possession time in the first, but we needed to get more pucks on net,” Lalonde said. “That’s exactly what happened on that goal — we had three shot attempts to get it on net and then we get a rebound.”
The Flyers dropped to 25-18-6 off their fourth straight loss.
“We’re struggling to make plays,” Philadelphia coach John Tortorella said. “We doubled them in shot attempts — I think we had 75 attempts — but we’re just not developing much offense.”
Moritz Seider pushed the advantage to 2-0 at 7:15.
“I saw [Alex DeBrincat] on the far side of the net, so I was trying to get the puck over there,” Seider said. “It hit the stick and just floated in. That’s pretty lucky, but I’ll always take a goal.”
Andrew Copp added a shorthanded marker Copp scored short-handed midway through the second for the 3-0 final count on the scoreboard.
“These are the kind of meaningful games that we want to be playing,” Seider said. “We want to battle hard, and I think today was a great example of that. We played a really solid team and we shut them down defensively.”
Samuel Ersson made 14 saves in the loss.
“Right now, we’re not getting the bounces,” Ersson said. “That’s the way it goes sometimes. We’ve got to fight through this and climb out of this situation.”
