“Awareness,” Lundqvist said in replying to a question about his success. “I think I kind of lacked it in the second period against Pittsburgh. It was a game for us, good game for me to really work through it and battle because they kept coming.”

The Rangers built a 3-0 lead through two periods of play and the3n had to hold off the Flyers in the third period.

Matt Puempel, Derek Stepan and Kevin Hayes scored for New York to get the big lead heading to the final frame.

“Their goalie played a good game, made some key saves for them, but I think we stuck with it and at the end we were right there to tie it up,” the Flyers’ Claude Giroux said. “I think we played a solid game. The last few games, they’ve been really good games, just we can’t find a way to get the win. I think we’ve got to stay positive here.”

Steve Mason made 20 saves in the loss.

The Flyers outshot the Rangers for the game but in the third period they were relentless with a 20-8 shot advantage.

Chris VandeVelde and Shayne Gostisbehere broke through to get the Flyers close.

The three Rangers’ goals were all the result of errors by the Flyers that enabled New York to capitalize with their speed and good stick work.

“The little details in the game we need to pay attention to, but at the same time I think we’re playing a lot better than the start of the year and we’re not doing as many turnovers as the start of the year,” Giroux said. “We play like we played [Friday], we’re going to win a lot of games.”

Puempel was playing his first game with New York since being picked up on waivers this week.

“Confident kid (Puempel),” Rangers Marc Staal said . “Picked his spot and got it. That’s huge when you have injuries to have guys come in and contribute. Big for us.”
