On Friday, May 19 the Peterborough Petes headed to London for game five of their best of seven OHL Championship Series against the London Knights. With a win, the Petes would win their 10th J. Ross Robertson Cup and qualify for the 2023 Memorial Cup in Kamloops, BC. After dropping game one in London, the Petes have fought back and won three straight games to go up 3-1 in the series. Local talent, J.R. Avon will be looking to stay hot for the Petes, after scoring twice in a 5-3 game four win on Wednesday night in Peterborough.

It was finally the start to the game that the Petes have been looking for. It all started when Michael Simpson made a spectacular breakaway save to deny London from scoring first, as they had the previous two games. Peterborough would feed off of the momentum provided by their goaltender, and start to work London in the offensive zone. Six minutes into the game, the pressure would pay off. On a powerplay, a puck took a deflection and landed right on the stick of Connor Lockhart who fired it home to give the Petes the lead. Scoring first was a huge boost for the Petes, who were able to quiet the London faithful early in the game. Just when it looked like Peterborough would take their 1-0 lead into the break, the Knights scored late in the period to tie it up at 1-1. After the goal, the game would enter the intermission tied at one.
The second period would not be as kind to the Petes. Just four minutes into the middle frame, London scored to take their first lead of the game. The Petes would settle down after the goal, but no matter how hard they tried, they would not be able to break past the London defence. The Knights would add to their lead late in the period and take a 3-1 advantage heading into the final 20.
The Petes would push hard for a goal in the final 20, but wouldn’t be able to put one on the board. London would add an empty netter, taking the game 4-1 and forcing a game six on Sunday in Peterborough.
The Petes are back at the PMC on Sunday, May 21 for game six of their OHL Final best of seven series against the London Knights. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Fans can catch the game on OHL Live, TSN, Freq 90.5, Oldies 96.7, and Classic Rock 107.9.
