The London Knights scored six unanswered goals to lead them to a 6-2 victory over the Guelph Storm at Budweiser Gardens on Tuesday.
With the victory, London improves to 14-7-1-0 and Guelph drops to 8-12-2-1. Earning two points, the Knights are tied with the Flint Firebirds for third in the Western Conference as they extend their winning-streak to five games. The Storm had their win-streak snapped at four games.
Guelph jumped ahead early with a pair of goals in the first 8:15 of the game. Danny Zhilkin scored the games first goal 2:57 in, tapping a rebound into an open net on the power play. Valentin Zhugin extended his goal-streak to three games when he fired a wrist shot past London goaltender Brett Brochu on an odd-man rush just over five minutes later.
The Knights rallied back in the second half of the first frame with two goals of their own. They also scored their first goal of the game of the power play when London captain George Diaco attempted a centring pass from behind the net that took an odd deflection past Jacob Oster. With 0.2 seconds remaining in the period Easton Cowan scored a buzzer-beater to tie the game at two before the intermission.
London took the lead in the second period when Isaiah George scored the game-winner, letting a wrist shot fly from the face off dot to the left of Jacob Oster. Ruslan Gazizov scored on a rebound in front of Guelph’s net 2:58 later. Later in the second, Ryan Del Monte capitalized on a turnover in the Storm zone to score the fifth unanswered goal for the Knights.
Logan Mailloux added an insurance marker 28 seconds into the third period on the power play, firing a slapshot past Oster for the lone goal of the final frame.
The Storm will get another crack at the Knights in a rematch on Tuesday, January 3 at Budweiser Gardens in London.
