ONTARIO, CALIF. –Ryan Lomberg scored late in the third period but the Heat couldn’t get past the Ontario Reign to start the road trip, falling by a 4-1 final.
The Heat didn’t get the start they wanted as just over five and a half minutes in, Ontario defenseman Daniel Brickley was able to put back a rebound past Heat goalie Jon Gillies to open the scoring.
Toward the end of the first, it’d be another defenseman, Kurtis MacDermid, who’d one-time a shot past Gillies to help the home team take the 2-0 lead into the dressing room after one period.
The Reign kept the momentum going in the second, scoring at the tail end of a lengthy power-play chance courtesy of Matt Roy and then added their fourth of the night thanks to Sean Walker late in the second period to take a 4-0 lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes of play.
While it looked like Ontario goalie Charles Williams was going to earn his first AHL win and record his first AHL shutout, it’d be Lomberg who’d score on the rebound to end the shutout bid, but in the end it’s Williams and the Reign who came away with the 4-1 win.
