In Detroit, Blake Coleman scored in extra time on Tuesday night to give the Tampa Bay Lighting a 4-3 win over the Red Wings.
“Detroit hadn’t played in [five] days, and they were waiting for us,” Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman said. “They were better than us tonight, especially in the second period, but we fought back in the third.”
Andrei Vasilevskiy made 20 saves to get the win.
“I don’t think there was ever a doubt in our minds that we were going to make a push,” Coleman said.
Adam Erne scored off the power play to give the Wings a 1-0 lead in the first period.
Brayden Point replied for Tampa with a power play of his own for a 1-1 tie.
Tyler Johnson put the Bolts up 2-1
Patrik Nemeth and Dylan Larkin tied the game and put the Red Wings, 3-2, respectively.
“I thought this was one of the best games we’ve played in a while, especially in the second period,” Larkin said. “We were on our toes, we were hard to play against and we created pressure. I just don’t think you can sit back and defend your way into two points in the third period against that team.”
Erik Cernak made extra time needed when he tied the game, again, this time, 3-3, midway through the third period.
Thomas Greiss made 25 saves in the loss.
