Lightning keep pace, trail Bruins by three points

After a fashion, there is more to keeping pace in a playoff race.  At some point you need the opposition to lose.

Thursday night the Tampa Bay Lightning did their part by hanging a 5-3 loss on the Detroit Red Wings in Tampa to keep pace with the Boston Bruins who were defeating the Dallas Stars, 2-0.

The outcome of the night was the status quo with Boston holding a three-point cushion for the second wild card spot.

Andrei Vasilevskiy made 31 saves to pick up the win for the Bolts who the Bruins to lose.

Five different skaters struck for the Lightning including J.T. Brown, Andrej Sustr, Alex Killorn, Jonathan Drouin and Yanni Gourde

Frans Nielsen, Danny DeKeyser and Mike Green were the Wings’ goal scorers.

“I think we played OK,” Nielsen said. “We made mistakes with the puck and gave up too many scoring chances where [Mrazek] had to make a big save. As soon as we got the puck down their end, we did some good stuff and created chances.”

Petr Mrazek made 26 saves in taking the loss for Detroit.

“I didn’t think we had enough guys ready to go from the drop of the puck. We certainly had some that were competitive, but we had too many guys not have their ‘A’ or ‘B’ games,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said of the effort from his club.
