Lee placed on long-term injured reserve by Islanders

Anders Lee was placed on long-term injured reserve retroactive to March 11 by the New York Islanders on Sunday.

Goalie Carter Hart #79 and Shayne Gostisbehere #53 of the Philadelphia Flyers and Anders Lee #27 of the New York Islanders look to the point for a shot

The move comes after the forward sustained a lower-body injury following a collision with New Jersey Devils forward Pavel Zacha in the first period of a 5-3 win on Thursday.

“Anders is our captain, he’s our leader,” Islanders coach Barry Trotz said after the win. “He does everything right. He’s such a good pro and such a good person. He’s got the total respect of our whole team and the bench all the time. [There are] very few times Anders Lee struggles to get up from any kind of hit or anything. He’s a tough, tough man and everybody on our bench felt for him there.”

Lee has 19 points and leads the Islanders with 12 goals in 27 games this season. He had not missed a game in the past four seasons and had missed three games in the past six seasons.

“You hate to see a guy go down, especially Anders, our leader,” Islanders forward Brock Nelson said. “Goes out plays hard, battles every night. Guys feed off him, look up to him. … Guys are going to try and rally for him out there.”

The Islanders (18-6-4), who are in first place in the MassMutual East Division, defeated the Devils 3-2 in their first game without Lee on Saturday and will look to sweep the three-game set on Sunday
