Leafs take 2-1 series lead after rallying in Game 3 for OT win Bozak tips in winner early in OT

Three games in, three overtimes for the Toronto Maple Leafs in their opening round series with Washington.

On Monday night, the Leafs made the most noise as they rallied from a 3-1 second period deficit to take a 4-3 win in overtime and a 2-1 series lead.

Tyler Bozak scored on a carry-over power play in the extra session to give the Leafs the win.

“It’s a lot of emotions,” Bozak said. “You just want to be with your teammates and celebrate. Obviously, we’ve had a lot of ups and downs in this series. Every game is overtime. So those are the most fun games to play definitely, so it’s nice that we got rewarded tonight.”

Frederik Andersen made 23 saves and got stronger after the Leafs fell into the 3-1 hole.

Nazem Kadri, Auston Matthews and William Nylander scored for Toronto in regulation.

“We were amped up, to say the least. We had tons of energy. Energy wasn’t a problem; we probably should have played longer the other night (in Game 2), but getting to the right spots and stopping there was a bit of a problem so we’ll get that sorted out,” Toronto head coach Mike Babcock said about the Leafs’ rally.

Nicklas Backstrom, Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored for Washington in the loss.

After taking the two-goal lead in the second period, Washington appeared to let up a bit and were unable to convert on a two-man advantage that gave life to the Maple Leafs.

“I think if you have a short memory, you get over it and move on. [Tuesday], we’ll look at stuff and be better as a team. You just have to build on that. You can’t dwell too much on the past. We still have plenty of time to create our own future.” Washington’s John Carlson said after the loss.
