In Sunrise Wednesday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs skated off with a 3-2 win in the shootout over the Panthers as Frederik Andersen made 45 saves to get the win.
“I was definitely motivated for this one. These were big points for us,” Andersen said.
Mitchell Marner was the only goal scorer in the skills competition to give the Leafs the victory.
“Obviously, it feels nice to get one out there,” Marner said. “I was just trying to get it over that stick of his. He got a piece of it, and luckily it had enough juice to get through. I wanted that move from the start, and luckily it went in.”
Auston Matthews and William Nylander scored for the Leafs in regulation who improved to 15-12-7 on the year.
“We’re getting a bit more comfortable on the road,” Matthews said. “It’s all part of maturing, but the big thing is we have to keep doing it. We can’t be too satisfied. We’ve got to go into Tampa tomorrow night and win and keep rolling.”
Jonathan Marchessault and Vincent Trocheck had the Panthers goals in the third period to help the Panthers rally from a 2-0 deficit to get the point in the loss.
“Great comeback, proud as heck of the guys,” Rowe said. “They never gave up. I thought we battled real hard in the second, and then what we did in the third was unbelievable, putting up the shots that we put up. I know it’s disappointing for the locker room, but to get a point out of that, the way the game was going, I thought was unbelievable.”
