“[Andersen] was the best player on the ice,” Matthews said. “He’s making huge saves, especially in that first period. You know things were kind of not rolling for us, we were giving up a lot of opportunities, and he stood on his head.”

Tuukka Rask made 16 saves in taking the loss.

“It was one of those games again. Early on in the season, there were times we’ve kept the puck out of our own net and scored one or two goals,” Rask said. “But today we were down by two again and trying to catch up and get yourself going.”

The Leafs improved to 11-10-5 on the season.

“I thought in the first period we didn’t do anything, didn’t win any battles, didn’t skate,” Toronto coach Mike Babcock said. “We were way better in the second, skated and had much better play.”

Brad Marchand broke out of a scoring slump with his first goal in six games. The Bruins fell to 15-12-2 on the season.

“First chances are there, but then we don’t pounce on the second and third opportunities. Obviously, the goalies are too good in this league if you don’t make it hard on them. So I think a lot of it is that.” the Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron said of Boston’s missed opportunities.
