Late strike sends Flames over Stars, 5-4 Toffoli hits winner with six seconds left on the clock

In Dallas, the visiting Calgary Flames blew 2-0 and 4-2 leads on Monday night, and needed a goal from Tyler Toffoli with six seconds left in the game to give them a 5-4 over the Stars.

“I took a peek at the red line, right around there, and saw that I had enough time to do whatever I wanted,” Toffoli said. “Obviously, made the right choice.”

The Flames improved to 28-23-13 after snapping an ugly fie-game schneid.

Jacob Markstrom made 29 saves to get the win.

Nick Ritchie hit for a goal in the first period, and Nikita Zadorov scored in the middle frame to give the Flames a 2-0 lead.

“We always have to make it a tight game towards the end,” Flames forward Elias Lindholm said. “It was nice to find a way and get some bounces towards the end. There hasn’t been a lot of them this year. Nice to get the two points at the end.”

With the loss, Dallas is just three points clear of the Minnesota Wild for the top spot in the Central Division.

“They’re all learning lessons, I think, for our group,” Stars coach Peter DeBoer said. “At the end of the day, I think you get what you deserve in this league most nights I find. I’m not sure we deserved to win tonight based on what we put out there for 60 minutes.”

The Stars rallied in the third period to tie the game, 4-4, on goals from Roope Hintz at 9:49, and Jamie Benn at 14:12.

“We don’t like to be in those positions, but we’re comfortable being down,” Stars forward Tyler Seguin said. “We know we’ve got a lot of belief in this group that we can come back in games. Obviously, that one hurts.”

After the Flames had taken the 2-0 lead in the second stanza, Jason Robertson and Max Domi tied the game, 2-2, in the frame.

“I think today we started pretty slow,” Hintz said. “We weren’t at our best at the beginning. I think that was on us. The next game we’ve got to come hard right away when it starts.

Dallas dropped to 34-17-13.

Lindholm restored the Flames lead, 3-2, at 17:53 of the second.

“We played a pretty solid game,” Ritchie said. “There was some back-and-forth with having a lead and giving it up. Good one in the end. I think we deserved to win that one.”

Rasmus Andersson put Calgary ahead, 4-2 early in the third period.
