In Washington, DC, the Boston Bruins dropped a 2-1 road decision.
Vitek Vanecek made 25 saves in the Washington win.
The game appeared headed to extra time when Michael Raffl scored with three seconds left on the regulation clock.
“As soon as [Justin Schultz] rimmed the puck, I looked up and I saw it was like six seconds left,” Raffl said. “So, he kind of gave me some room, their D-man there, and it was the right play at the right time, I guess.”
Carl Hagelin scored for Washington to tie the game at 1-1.
Boston took a 1-0 lead off a goal from Curtis Lazar.
“Those guys have worked hard to get an opportunity,” Lazar said. “It’s funny for a guy like myself, new to the team, I didn’t know 60 percent of them until tonight before the game. I’m shaking hands and whatnot. We fought hard. A lot of good things to take away from this game and I thought they rose to the occasion.”
Jeremy Swayman made 30 saves in the loss.
“I think Swayman’s done everything we’ve asked,” Boston head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “Thought he was solid again tonight tracking pucks. The last [goal], obviously a tough one. I think it went in off his head from below the goal line. It probably happens once a year … if that. The other one was a scramble around the net.”
