Late goal sends Islanders over Anaheim,. 4-3 Late shortie sinks Ducks

In Elmont, Simon Holmstrom hit for a shorthanded goal at 18:27 of the third period on Wednesday to lift the Islanders to a 4-3 win over the visiting Anaheim Ducks.

Semyon Varlamov made  saves in the win.

“There was not a lot going on at times. We didn’t give them a whole lot, and they got a couple of good breaks on their goals,” New York coach Lane Lambert said. “The short-handed goal went off our guy, and a guy broke his stick. It was not an easy game to play, but I thought our guys did a good job of battling through it and finding a way to win.”

The Isles moved to 14-7-7.

After a scoreless first period, Kyle Palmieri scored with 46 seconds gone in the middle frame for a 1-0 lead to the Islanders.

New York pushed the lead to 2-0 on a strike by Casey Cizikas at 6:32 off an odd man rush.

The Ducks dropped to 10-18-0 off their fourth straight loss.

“We sleepwalked through the first period. Kind of saw that coming, and we kind of got traction as the game went on,” Anaheim coach Greg Cronin said. “I thought we played a solid third period, and we just fumbled the power play at the end. There’s not much to say.”

THe Ducks replied with a marker from Troy at 7:47 to trim the deficit to 2-1 for Anaheim.

Adam Henrique the struck for a goal at 13:29 to knot the game, 2-2.

Sam Carrick put the Ducks up, 3-2, with a a mrker at 5:07.

“I was trying to shoot through him and use him as a screen,” Carrick said. “I think it hit off him and kind of got a lucky bounce. Anytime you can get a chance in the slot there to throw it on the net, it’s never a bad shot.”

New York rallied back to tie the game on a power play strike by Martin Barzal at 7:46.

“It’s a mature group. A lot of experienced guys that have been through a lot of situations,” the Isles’ Noah Dobson said. “So, we’ve handled it pretty well. A lot of injuries. Guys are in and out. As a group, everyone’s kind of coming together to give a little more to pick up the slack, so it’s been a couple of big wins here as of late.”

John Gibson made 30 saves in the loss.
