In Anaheim, Detroit’s Michael Rasmussen snapped a 2-2 with the Ducks on Sunday night with 67 seconds left on the regulation clock to send the Red Wings to the win by the same count.
The goal was allowed after video review confirmed no kicking motion.
“I thought it hit my stick a little, so I wasn’t too nervous (about the review for a distinct kicking motion), but you’re always nervous when they go check it out, for sure,” Rasmussen said.
Alex Lyon made 29 saves in the win.
The Red Wings improved to 20-16-4.
“It’s a huge trip for us,” Detroit’s Dylan Larkin said. “We left Detroit feeling like we played a couple good hockey games and the results were coming, and they came on this trip.”
The Ducks dropped to 13-25-1 off their fifth straight loss.
“We’ve got to start finding ways to put some victories together here,” Anaheim’s Cam Fowler said. “There was a lot of emphasis on tonight’s game, especially going out on a hard road trip here. So, unfortunately, we didn’t get the job done, but it’s just frustration. I’d say that’s probably the main word for our group right now.”
Trevor Zegras scored a pair of goals in the Ducks loss. His first came with just 20 seconds of game fresh ice used for a 1-0 lead to ANaheim.
“It’s not how you want to start hockey games,” Larkin said. “We felt like we shouldn’t have been in that spot, and we got a little flustered.”
The Ducks played a decent opening stanza, keeping the Red Wings to no shots on goal through the front end of the first.
“I thought we played a good first, however many minutes it was, and then we started getting into some penalty trouble,” Zegras said. “When you play these guys, with some highly-skilled players, it definitely can change the momentum of the game.”
Larkin tied the game, 1-1, at 11:10 of the first, off a power play strike.
Detroit took a 2-1 lead in the middle frame when Joe Veleno scored at 2:20 of the period.
The goal was reviewed after play continued until the puck was covered int he crease.
“Good special teams win games, and that’s a good little streak for our penalty-kill unit,” Rasmussen said.
Zegras’ double came at 3:55 of the third period to tie it, 2-2.
“I thought we did a pretty good job,” Zegras said. “We wanted to work it behind the net, get the cycles going and find guys in that slot area. I feel like we could’ve had a couple more, for sure, but their goalie played well. So, credit to him.”
Lukas Dostal made 25 saves in the loss.
