The Philadelphia Flyers were just seconds from getting to extra time against the Boston Bruins Saturday until Drew Stafford potted the game-winner with less than six left in regulation.
“Even when you’re not playing your best, you find a way to win — whether it’s a lucky bounce like that — it’s 99 out of 100 times, it’s not going to go in. So those kinds of breaks, you’ll take those, especially when things might not be going your way a certain night,” Stafford said.
The win pushed the Bruins to 10-3-0 with Bruce Cassidy behind the bench.
“We knew we didn’t have a great second period, so we made a couple adjustments on our breakout,” Cassidy said. “I thought they were doing a real good job on the forecheck, putting us in bad spots in the second period, and we got hemmed in our end. As a result, we had no flow in that period. So that was one thing.
“The message mostly was sometimes you’ve got to win 5-4 and sometimes it’s 2-1. And it was shaping up to be a 2-1 game, so let’s accept it, manage the puck, play tight, and if we get an opportunity let’s make sure we bear down. And we did have some because we were cleaner in our end and we managed the puck better.”
David Pastrnak also scored for the Bruins.
Tuukka Rask made 26 saves to pick up the win as the Bruins improved to 36-26-6.
The lone goal yielded by Rask was to Jordan Weal.
“We worked pretty hard today,” Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol said. “You know, the effort of our hockey team, on the road here was excellent. You look at the goal that wasn’t allowed, some other plays, are those bounces or breaks? Hey, that’s just part of hockey. Our team played real hard today.”
