In Nashville, Dante Fabbro waited until literally, the last minute of regulation to score the game-winning goal for the Predators in a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.
“Obviously a great pass by [Kunin],” Fabbro said. “I was able to get in a lane there for him to give it to me, and you’ve just kind of have to be able to get it by that first guy. I was able to do that. A great screen in front. I wouldn’t say it was a hard shot by any means, but just get it there and hopefully something good happens out of it.”
The win ended a string of ugly losses for the Preds who improved to 8-8-0.
Pekka Rinne made 24 save in the win.
“It’s been a grind the last few weeks,” Rinne said. “When you lose games it seems like everything becomes a little bit harder. You start maybe doubting yourself, but we stuck together. It’s a huge win. I think there was a lot of positive things.”
Robby Fabbri and Marc Staal scored for Detroit.
“Frustrating,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “Yeah, frustrating for sure at this point. I thought we put ourselves in a position to win another hockey game, and we didn’t finish it. That’s the step we need to learn to take now. I would say we gave them too many chances in the third period. I didn’t like the third period and the chances we gave up. Now, we had them too. It was kind of a wild period at times, but that’s not a recipe for winning.”
Matt Duchene and Ryan Ellis also scored for Nashville.
“I think we’re working harder,” Ellis said. “At times, not just this unit but every unit throughout the League, can get very one-and-done. One shot and they ice it, and then we’ve got to break out again.
“I think we’re working harder to retrieve pucks, and then we have special players that need to make special plays, and [Forsberg] did that tonight. It was an unbelievable pass after we worked and worked and worked and eventually got a chance. It’s been a work in progress but I feel like it’s coming.”
Thomas Greiss made 20 saves in the loss.
“I thought we moved the puck really well,” the Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin said. “We moved our feet. I think [Mantha] was really good tonight. Good for him, he was moving his feet and making a lot of plays. I thought we moved the puck and got out of our zone pretty well. We got great goaltending from [Greiss] again. We were in the game. We were right there.”
