Late goal lifts Macon past RiverKings

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – Brant Sherwood and Dillan Fox shared a goal and assist a piece in the second period, but the Mississippi RiverKings (21-14-2) fell to the second-place Macon Mayhem (21-6-5) 4-3 on Tuesday night.

The Mayhem wasted no time in the first period by jumping out to 1-0 lead. Macon defenseman Daniel Echeverri tallied a goal from the point that sputtered through legs of goalie Peter Di Salvo on the power play.

The RiverKings fought back in the second to break Macon’s lead. 13:02 into play, Dillan Fox wristed a shot that Brantley Sherwood deflected past Macon’s Jordan Ruby’s glove to tie the game on a power play. Just two minutes later, Dillan Fox pushed the puck into the net with assists from Brant Sherwood and Ryan Marcuz to give the team a 2-1 lead.

The one goal lead would not last long. 13:48 minutes into the third period, Macon center Stephen Pierog took advantage of a miscue in the RiverKings zone and sent a shot past Di Salvo to tie the game 2-2. Later in the period, Mayhem defenseman Marc Thompson whizzed a shot past Di Salvo, through traffic, from the blueline to give Macon the 3-2 lead.

Later in the period, the RiverKings capitalized on power play to tie the game with a shot from the slot by Mike Moran. Yet, Macon’s offense would not go away. In the final minutes of the game, Mayhem’s Jake Tresk inched a goal past RiverKings goalie Peter Di Salvo to ensure the victory.

Jordan Ruby (11-3-2) earned the win by diverting 26 of 29 shots for the Macon Mayhem, while RiverKings goalie Peter Di Salvo (8-3-0) took the loss by stopping 25 of 29 shots.
