NEW YORK – After leading the first two periods in shots 23-17, the Rangers four penalty third period would be too damaging as the Vancouver Canucks came away with a late 2-1 win. Vancouver goalie Ryan Miller would finish the night with 32 saves for his ninth win, while Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made a 23 save effort in his sixth loss.
New York controlled most of the game and entered the third period with 23 seconds left on a power play. 1:32 into the period Dominic Moore took a hooking penalty followed by
a delay of game by Jarret Stoll when he fell on the puck in his own zone, despite what head coach Alain Vigneault thought after having a wordy altercation with the referees.
The Canucks made the Rangers pay, scoring the first of the game which prompted a mocking of the refs by Vigneault, giving the Canucks yet another 5-on-3 power play, served by Chris Kreider. Less than a minute after that, Captain Ryan McDonagh took a high sticking penalty.
With three men in the box the Rangers caught a little bit of luck as Canucks Alexandre Burrows would take a costly interference penalty during the 5-on-3 in the Rangers zone.
After five total penalties in the first five minutes of the third period, a penalty shot was awarded to New York after the puck seemed to be covered in the crease by a Canucks player after four Rangers crashed the crease. The call allowed Vigneault to choose anyone on the ice he wanted to take the shot. The one man he chose was not one of the four Rangers in the crease, but 39-year old defenseman Dan Boyle.
Starting off on Millers right, Boyle moved back over the middle to his forehand and snuck the puck in at the last second, tying the game at one.
That lead would not last long.
Daniel Sedin would record his 13th goal of the year, exactly 30 seconds later off a beautiful redirect.
After a couple more back and fourths and one last Rangers power play, the Blueshirts would not have enough to win, giving them their eighth loss of the year.
The Rangers next game is Friday night at 9:30pm against the Edmonton Oilers. They will have a ceremony for former General Manager, Glen Sather prior to puck drop. He was the GM for both teams in his career.
The Vancouver Canucks next game will be in Chicago against the Blackhawks on Sunday, December 13th at 4pm.
