In Detroit, the Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin his for his career NHL hat trick in a 5-2 win over the visiting New Jersey Devils.
“This feels great because it took a little longer than I hoped to get one,” said Larkin, who is in his seventh season. “I don’t even remember the last one I had. It was probably in minor hockey, because I don’t think I ever had one in Triple-A or junior, either.”
Thomas Greiss made 31 saves in the Detroit win.
“This is really a huge win for us,” Larkin said. “We’ve had to deal with a lot in the last few days, so to get guys stepping into the lineup and helping us get two points was really important.”
The Red Wings improved to 15-13-3.
With Detroit head coach Jeff on NHL COVID19 prot9ocol, the Red Wings called on Grand Rapids Griffins head coach, Ben Simon to handle the coaching duties behind the bench.
“We are definitely giving [Simon] the win,” Red Wings assistant Doug Houda said. “This was a tough situation for him to have to come up here and take over on short notice.”
New Jersey iced 17 skaters in the game with players on various illness tacks including NHL COVID19 protocol.
“We knew we were shorthanded tonight, which put us in a tough spot,” New Jersey head coach Lindy Ruff said. “We started out the way we wanted to play, but their top guys just had a better game than our top guys.”
Dawson Mercer scored a shorthanded goal for New Jersey.
Tyler Bertuzzi struck for two goals for Detroit.
Akira Schmid made 25 saves in the New Jersey loss.
