In Winnipeg, the Jets ended the Los Angeles Kings winning streak at seven on Saturday night, in a 3-2 overtime win.
The Jets’ Mark Scheifele officially ended the Kings run when he scored just 32 seconds into the extra session.
“It was a great pass by [Nikolaj Ehlers],” Scheifele said. “It felt good to end that one. It was a grind of a game, and we started to pick our game up toward the end of that third period and play a little more grinding style. You need to be able to pull those ones off in this league.”
Connor Hellebuyck made 27 saves in the Winnipeg win.
The Jets improved to 8-3-3.
Carl Grundstrom and Brendan Lemieux were the Kings strikers.
“Any time you go into the third period with a lead and you don’t get two points, it [stinks],” Lemieux said. “It feels like a loss, but in the grand scheme of things, we definitely see this trip as a win. We got back to playing road hockey the way that we should. We made some strides with our team that I think we’re definitely going to remember for the rest of the year and we’ve got a good foundation to build a successful, hopefully playoff, hockey team.”
LA dropped to 8-5-2.
“We had a tenacity to us that was real good,” Los Angeles head coach Todd McLellan said. “I think we had a really good hockey club frustrated. Two special situations — one on the power play and one in overtime — gave them a chance at a win. That part is disappointing.”
Kyle Connor opened the scoring in the game to give the Jets a 1-0 lead.
Winnipeg’s Dylan DeMelo hit for a shorthanded goal in the third period to tie the game, 2-2 and force the extra session.
“You play [defenseman], you’re not maybe relied on to score but you want to contribute, and there’s no feeling like scoring,” DeMelo said. “It was nice to get that one, and the timing was crucial, and to be able to contribute in that sense it feels really good. I don’t do it often so I’m happy to contribute and get a big goal for us.”
It was his first goal in 76 games with the Jets.
“That’s a big one for him,” Jets head coach Paul Maurice said. “Everybody kind of knows it’s been a while for him. So much more impactful, the kind of goal, shorthanded and late in the game. So he gets to hold on to that one for a while. That’s good for the room.”
Cal Petersen made 20 saves in the LA loss.
“We played tight and we didn’t give them anything for free,” Grundstrom said. “They have a really good forward corps so we didn’t want to let them get anything for free today, and I think we did a good job.”
