JACKSONVILLE, FLA – Friday night at the Veterans Memorial Arena, the hometown Jacksonville Icemen continued their four game homestand by hosting their division rivals the Atlanta Gladiators for the first time this season. In a tight defensive struggle, Jacksonville was able to come out on top on Kris Newbury’s overtime goal to grab a 2-1 victory.

Tanner Jaillet got the start in goal for the Icemen while ex-Icemen’s goal Colton Phinney got the start for Atlanta.

The only goal of the first came from the Jacksonville Icemen when Newbury beat Phinney low from the top of the slot with 22 seconds left on the power play. For Newbury, it was his sixth goal of the season and his first power play goal of the year at 10:32. Assists on the goal were given to Wacey Rabbit and Cody Fowlie.

Less than two minutes into the second period, 1:50 to be exact, Atlanta tied up the game. Jaillet attempt a backhanded pass to Kayle Doetzel behind the net. However, the pass was intercepted by David Mazurek, who swung around the net and scored on the empty net before Jaillet could get back in front. The goal was unassisted and was also the only goal of the period.

There would be no scoring in the third so the game went to overtime tied at 1. In overtime, Jacksonville would get the only three shots on goal and Newbury would end the game at the 2:38 mark of overtime when he beat Phinney high to the glove side, just inside the top corner. Jacksonville won the game 2-1.
