Kraken recover to down Detroit in OT, 5-4 McCann ties it late, sets up winner in OT

In Detroit, the Seattle Kraken stopped the Red Wings’ five-game winning streak on Tuesday with a goal by Jordan Eberle  with five seconds left in extra time for a 5-4 win.

“We haven’t been very good in shootouts, so we wanted to finish it off it overtime,” Eberle said. “It was huge to get one. This will spark us a bit.”

It was Seattle’s second win of the season.

“I was pretty gassed, but I saw the puck come off the glass and [Eberle] beat his guy off the wall,” Seattle’s Jared McCann said after setting up the game-winner. “I just tried to lay it in there for him.”

Joey Daccord made 23 saves in the win.

Seattle had to recover from surrendering three power play goals in the third period which erased a 3-1 lead they held, leading to Detroit taking a 4-3 advantage.

“There was kind of a wave of power plays, and they’ve really been rolling on their power play,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “To be able to push back — not get rattled after giving up a lead — makes this an important win for us.”

McCann forced the extra session with a goal with 82 seconds left in the third, with the Kraken net empty.

Detroit took the lead in the third on those three power play goals beginning with Shayne Gostisbehere at 2:10 of the third.

“We’ve got weapons at all five positions, with [Larkin] and [DeBrincat], [David Perron] down low and Seider moving the puck,” said Gostisbehere. “They’ve only got four defenders, so we know someone is going to be open.”

Dylan Larkin  tied tied it at 4:38, and Alex DeBrincat  put the Red Wings on top, 4-3, at 10:28 of the third.

Detroit had taken a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal from Joe Veleno  with 67 seconds gone in the first.

“We know he has the ability to score,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “Just not with a really open net.

Jaden Schwartz then hit for a power play goal at 5:18, then added a second for a 2-1 lead to Seattle at 17:54 of the first.

Tye Kartye scored off the power play with less than a minute left in the first for a 3-1 advantage.

Ville Husso made 33 saves in the loss.
