In Detroit, Oliver Bjorkstrand scored in the first period to give the Seattle Kraken a 2-1 lead on the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.
His second strike of the match came in extra time to send Seattle to a 5-1-4 win.
“If you look at how close the standings are, you know we can’t afford to lose any games,” he said. “These games are huge.”
The Kraken improved to 34-21-6.
Philipp Grubauer got the win after replacing the starter Martin Jones, on 16 saves,
Jones had surrendered three goals and made nine saves before getting the hook.
“I think we gave our goalies a tough time tonight,” Seattle’s Jared McCann said.
In the first period, Seattle took a 1-0 lead on a strike by McCann, Detroit replied with a goal from Ben Chiarot for a 1-1 tie.
Bjorkstrand put the Kraken up with his marker, 2-1.
McCann hit for his second of the frame and 3-1 lead to the Kraken.
Detroit replied with a marker from Adam Erne to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Red Wings dropped to 28-24-9.
“All in all, this is a pretty good point,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “It has been a really emotional few days and then we got down 3-1 tonight. I was proud of the guys for showing some pushback and getting back into the game.”
Seattle reclaimed the lead, 4-3, on a strike from Jaden Schwartz .
“We gave up goals at some tough times,” Lalonde said. “We killed two penalties and gave up goals shortly afterward, and then we did a great job on the kill in overtime and gave up a goal with four seconds left.”
Detroit forced the extra session at 14:48 of the second when Jake Walman tied the game, 4-4.
“This is a fun time to be playing hockey,” Eberle said. “You are watching the standings and try to make a push to get into the postseason in Year Two. I don’t think many people expected us to make the jump we’ve made.”
Ville Husso made 32 saves in the Detroit loss.
