Komets ground Wings 3-1

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Komets completed the season opening weekend with a 3-1 victory Saturday night in Fort Wayne for a successful sweep of the Kalamazoo Wings to start the season.  After spoiling the Wing’s home opener Friday night 5-3 at Kalamazoo the Komets returned home to follow with a win over the Wings and pleased a Coliseum crowd of 8,881 at the home opener.

The Komets surrendered the first goal of the game at 5:35 of the first period when Kalamazoo’s Adam Phillips beat Fort Wayne goaltender Pat Nagle with a power play tally.  The Komets rallied with two markers in the first at 7:52 by Peter Sivak and again at 13:30 by Trevor Cheek to send the game into the first intermission with Fort Wayne on top 2-1.

After no scoring in the second frame Fort  Wayne forward Shawn Szydlowski hit an open net with Kalamazoo netminder Joel Martin pulled for the extra attacker at 18:40 to seal the win for the Komets.

Nagle earned the win stopping 19 of 20 Kalamazoo shots while Martin suffered his second straight loss allowing two goals on 40 shots.

The Komets head into the second week of the young campaign with a 2-0-0 record and will host Indy next weekend on back-to-back nights Friday and Saturday.
