Knights exact some measure of revenge over Sharks

The San Jose Sharks opened the season visiting the Vegas Golden Knights and promptly surrendered two quick goals to the Knights.

“We said coming in we didn’t want to give them any in the first 10 minutes, and we gave them two,” Sharks captain Logan Couture said. “It’s tough to come back in this building when you give them two goals right away.”

Marc-Andre Fleury made 21 saves in the 4-1 win.

“It’s nice to get that first win at home, especially against these guys,” Fleury said. “Our crowd again was awesome, it was loud in there. I think our team played an awesome game from start to finish and I didn’t have to do too much back there.”

Cody Glass made his NHL debut for the Knights and scored.

“It’s special. You dream of it as a kid and for it to come true like that is unbelievable,” Glass said. “Very emotional. When I was sitting on the bench, I just had goosebumps. The crowd was unbelievable. It was a very special moment.”

Reilly Smith struck twice, and Mark Stone added a goal in the Knights’ win.

“This wasn’t a hard game for us to be ready for,” Stone said. “It’s the start of the season. It’s a big rivalry. They eliminated us from the playoffs last year, and we wanted to be ready. It’s just one game. We’re motivated, and that says a lot of the group we have here. Last year is over and we’re ready for an 82-game season and it started with a win tonight.”

Marcus Sorensen scored the lone goal for the Sharks.

Martin Jones made 31 saves iun the loss.

“We have a lot of young players that we’re asking to come into this environment against a veteran, battle-hardened team with revenge on their minds. It was a big ask. The result was just and deserved. Hopefully we’ll learn some lessons and get better from it,” Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer said after the loss.
