The Vegas Golden Knights are the lovable loser expansion team or yore. On the contrary, this is a team filled with enough heart and talent to find ways to win even after blowing three-goal leads.
On Friday, the Knights did just that, losing a three-goal lead to the San Jose Sharks and
then winning in extra time, 5-4.
Jonathan Marchessault struck for the game-winner at 1:21 of the extra session.
“We played good in overtime,” Marchessault said. “We didn’t give them much chances, not even one shot, I think, so it’s positive. I just tried to manage the puck (before the winning goal), and I got a lucky bounce there.”
William Karlsson (two goals), Shea Theodore and James Neal scored for Vegas in regulation.
“We don’t have a flashy group here, we just work hard and work harder than the other teams,” Marchessault said of his teammates.
Tomas Hertl, Brent Burns, Chris Tierney and Mikkel Boedker scored for the Sharks who at least picked up a point in the Knights’ eight straight home win.
“You get a point. That’s important,” Burns said.
The Knights tied an NHL record held by the Toronto Arenas in 1917-18 for the longest home streak by an expansion or new club.
It was a night for goalie hooks as the Knights started Maxime Lagace but hooked him out in favor of Malcolm Subban after the second intermission.
“We should have never let them come back, but that’s our group, the way we’re built, and we came back and got the two points,” Marchessault said. “That’s the only thing we’re looking at right now.”

Martin Jones got the start for the Sharks but did not make it out of the middle frame before being replaced by Aaron Dell who took the loss.
“There’s still a lot of things we can improve on. We’re playing well. The only thing we have to fix is we have to play 60 minutes,” the Sharks’ Joonas Donskoi after the Sharks in the loss.
