Kings win fifth straight with 5-2 decision over Islanders

In Los Angeles, the Kings won their sixth straight game in a 5-2 decision over the visiting New York Islanders on Saturday night.

Matt Roy and Trevor Moore hit for a goal each and two points in the win.

“We had a lot of energy. We had a big win last night, and I think that carried over into the start of the game,” Roy said. “Last night felt like a playoff game and we gave it our all, but at this point in the season we’re really excited to play and really excited to prove ourselves, so we were ready to go.”

The Kings moved to 29-17-7.

Cal Petersen made 26 saves in the LA win.

“We had guys guessing all over the ice,” New York head coach Barry Trotz said. “If you’re going to guess against a team that moves the puck like that, you are going to get what you saw. We were slow to the battle and we guessed on our assignments.”

The Islanders fell to 19-21-8.

“We were ready to go. We just didn’t execute,” the Islanders’ Anders Lee said. “We didn’t play to the level that they came out with. … The starts are something that we’ve focused on, and regardless of what we say, we’ve got to execute it.”

Phillip Danault and Roy gave the Kings a 2-0 lead in the opening frame.

“I just saw an opportunity to jump in,” Roy said. “Everyone was excited for me. It was a long wait.”

Quinton Byfield made 3-0 for LA early in the second period, before Lee cut the advantage to 3-1.

Brendan Lemieux restored the three-goal advantage with a goal in the waning seconds of the middle frame.

“We got it stabilized in the second, and then, obviously, that goal at the end of the period, I thought that crushed us,” Trotz said.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau struck for a goal in the third period to get the Isles within 4-2, but Moore potted an empty- netter for the 5-2 final.

Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves in the Isles loss.
