Kings strike late in OT for 3-2 win over Carolina

The Los Angeles Kings remained one of the hottest teams in the NHL these days with a 3-2 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Tanner Pearson struck for a goal with just 20 seconds left in the extra session.

The Canes force4d the extra session with a two-goal rally late in the third period on goals from Elias Lindholm and Victor Rask.

“It wasn’t the way we wanted to finish that game, but we’ll take it,” Pearson said.

Jonathan Quick made 32 saves  to stretch his personal win streak to six.

“I think this group understands that we had a lead, gave it up, but we still had an opportunity to get two points,” LA head coach John Stevens said. “There’s a big chunk of the group that knows how to win, comfortable playing in tight game. They’re not going to sit there and hang their head cause things didn’t go their way. There was still time on the clock to make it right.”

Tyler Toffoli and Anze Kopitar scored in regulation for the Kings who improved to 20-8-3 on the season.

“Oh, it was just a gusty effort from us,” Toffoli said. “I think [Quick] did a really good job of helping the three of us that were on the ice there, and we just locked it up and didn’t really give them as much as they probably wanted knowing that we were out there for so long. But we’ take it.”

Carolina’s rally allowed them to pick up the loser’s point despite being stymied by Quick early in the match.

“We did a good job of fighting back and just staying with it,” the Canes’ Jordan Staal said. “We’ve been a little mentally soft the last few games and tonight we could have easily folded. The third period was big for us. It was a whole game of working hard, which is what we want to do, and we play like that every night we’re going to be a lot better off.”

Scott Darling made 18 saves in taking the loss.

“The guys were dialed in right from the drop of the puck. I thought there’s lots of things we can build on and move forward with,” Peters said after the OT loss.
