In Los Angeles, Cal Petersen made 29 saves in a 3-0 shutout for the Kings over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night.
“They’ve kind of had our number the last couple of years here,” Petersen said. “For whatever reason, every game that we play, they’re a great team and it’s a dogfight for the whole 60 minutes, and that’s what makes a rivalry great, but glad that we were able to win this round.”
Anze Kopitar staked the Lings to an early 1-0 lad.
“Every time we got a couple of shifts and some flow going to our game, we took another penalty,” San Jose coach Bob Boughner said. “The whole second period, I think it seemed like I played the six same forwards the whole period just because we were killing so much.”
San Jose dropped to 26-26-8.
“Our game was a lot more assertive this time around. Didn’t really wait and feel our way into the game. Went at them,” Kopitar said. “Obviously, it was nice to get on the board on the power play too.”
Phillip Danault and Adrian Kempe also scored for LA.
The Kings improved to 34-21-8.
Kopitar’s goal came off the power play.
“The goal they scored, I mean, that’ll happen from time to time, but that’s not even a scoring chance. That’s from way outside the dot line, so those are tough to prevent. Those are the ones that have to stay out of your net, but it’s been our backbone all year, and special teams have helped us get quite a few points this year,” Boughner said.
James Reimer made 24 saves in the Sharks loss.
