In Boston, the Los Angeles Kings tied their game with the Bruins late in third period at 2-2, and Andreas Athanasiou scored with about two minutes gone in extra time for a 3-2 win to LA.
“It was a competitive game, right from the drop of the puck to the bitter end, and it was contested very hard by both teams,” Kings coach Todd McLellan said. “A lot of heavy lifting for both teams. So good for our team to play in that. Really good for our team to play in it and stick with it. We found a way to get two in the last few minutes of the game and used every minute we had, which was important.”
LA’s Trevor Moore forced the extra session with 2 with 25 seconds left on the regulation clock.
Cal Petersen made 30 saves in the Kings win.
“We’re putting a lot of different tricks in our bag, I guess, to find ways to win, and I think that’s only going to help us down the road,” Petersen said. “[That loss on Feb. 28] was a huge thing coming into the game for us. Obviously, we got embarrassed at home. … I think we came in with something to prove to show that we can play with the big boys. … It’s huge for our confidence. We were looking for some revenge.”
LA improved to 32-19-7.
Craig Smith and Trent Frederic were the Boston strikers.
“You’ve got to value the puck. The play at the end was not a very good hockey play, let’s face it. We gave up a breakaway. We got what we deserved,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. “I thought we were the better team until about 30 seconds left, and then it’s even. I still thought we were the better team.”
Boston dropped to 34-18-5.
“It’s tough. I thought for the most part we did a lot of good things,” Smith said. “There’s only two things you can do, you can sit and be [mad] about it, which we are right now, but we’ve got to make the next step forward, make the corrections and make sure that we’re tightening up. It’s all things we can fix, and we have the people to do it.”
Linus Ullmark made 25 saves. in the Bruins loss.
