It’s difficult to conceive of things getting much for the Los Angeles Kings this season.
Somehow, someway, they will develop the script to make it so.
On Saturday night, the Montreal Canadiens struck for three goals in the back half of the first period and then held off the Kings in a 3-2 win on home ice.
Shea Weber scored twice on the power play for the Habs.
“We know we haven’t been good enough in the last little while here,” Weber said. “… I thought tonight we had a much better start, and obviously you saw what a start can do. You play with the lead and, even though maybe it could have gone the other way for a while there, you definitely set yourself up to be more successful that way.”
Nate Thompson‘s goal for the Canadiens was bookended by Weber’s strikes.
Carey Price made 31 saves to get the win.
“I’m sure he’s very proud about it, but Shea puts in the work and he’s put in the work his whole career and he deserves those accolades,” Jonathan Drouin said. “He’s a team guy, but it’s always fun to see somebody that cares about the team accomplish that stuff.”
Anze Kopitar and Blake Lizotte scored for LA.
“The first period, it was a sloppy period and you can’t spot a team three goals,” Kopitar said. “We had a good second, a good third, but we’ve talked about this enough so far. I mean, it’s been 16 games in, you can’t play 40 minutes, or 45, or 55, you’ve got to play the full 60.”
The Kings dropped to 5-11-1.
“Any team that’s down is going to apply pressure, and I thought their keeper played very well too. We had opportunities to seal it, and [Quick] played really well for them,” Price said.

Jonathan Quick made 34 saves in the loss.
“We’re close, but close doesn’t get you wins, and we’re looking for a few right now,” Los Angeles coach Todd McLellan said.
