Kings keep pressure on Vegas with 5-2 win over Islanders LA is three points back of first place Golden Knights who downed Flyers on Tuesday

In Los Angeles, a four-goal outburst in the second period erased a 1-0 deficit for the Kings en route to a 5-2 win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night.“We know that getting into the playoffs is super important, but we have a really good team to push for that top spot,” Kings forward Trevor Moore said.

The Kings improved to 39-20-9, but remain three back of the Vegas Golden Knights for the top spot in the Pacific Division.

Joonas Korpisalo made 26 saves in the LA win.

The Isles took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a strike by Pierre Engvall .

“It didn’t go as planned there in the second,” Engvall said. “Obviously, it’s something we want to do better.”

The Islanders are two points back of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Blake Lizotte and Drew Doughty scored off the power play in the second period to take a 2-1 lead.

LA went 2-for-2 on the power play.

“Let’s face it, we didn’t reinvent the power play,” Kings coach Todd McLellan said. “We just got a little sharper, a little faster. … Today we moved the puck a little quicker, and (against) a pretty good penalty kill on that squad.”

New York dropped to 34-27-8.

Alex Iafallo scored to make it 3-1 to the Kings.

Trevor Moore then hit for a 4-1 advantage to LA.

“I think we have to play that way if we want to go deep [in the playoffs],” Moore said. “You look at teams who do go deep and it’s not one or two lines. You need everybody all 60 [minutes], all four lines.”

Jean-Gabriel Pageau for the Islanders to make it 4-2 coming out of the middle frame.

Quinton Byfield hit for an empty-net goal late in the third for the 5-2 final.

Ilya Sorokin made 32 saves. in the loss.
