It was only 30 seconds into the first period when Joe Thornton scored the opening goal for the Sharks.

Thornton took Tomas Hertl’s pass to the slot, just beyond the hash tags to fire a quick one-timer, beating Jonathan Quick through traffic.

The Sharks lead was short-lived however as Anze Kopitar evened the game at the 8:10 mark on a power play.

After Jake Muzzin’s shot from the top of the circle was blocked by Martin Jones, the puck landed on Milan Lucic’s stick.  Lucic, low near the red line just to the right of the net quickly passed the puck in front of the crease, where Kopitar wristed it past Jones for the game-tying goal.

The two teams remained locked up forcing the overtime period.

On a two-on-on breakaway, Tanner Pearson shot from the center of the right circle, beating Martin Jones through the five-hole at 3:47 into overtime.

Quick had 29 saves in the win, while Jones had 22 for the loss.

The Kings’ win brings them within one of the Sharks for the first round series.  Game four will be Wednesday at the SAP Center.
