Kings get 4-3 win over Ottawa in OT Fiala wins in OT for LA

In Los Angeles, the Kings held a 3-2 lead over the Ottawa Senators in the third period on Thursday night, before surrendering a goal to  Drake Batherson at 15:37, forcing extra time.

In the extra session, Kevin Fiala scored off a backhand with two minutes gone for a 4-3 win to the Kings.

“That’s a really hard goal to score,” Los Angeles coach Jim Hiller said. “He was at the end of the shift already. … I wouldn’t have liked to see that thing go the other way. I know we were tired. We were a little worried about that, but give Kevin credit.”

Cam Talbot made 28 saves in the win.

LA improved to 32-19-11 off their fourth straight game with a point.

“I think the attitude has changed quite a bit in our room, and I think it shows,” LA’s  Blake Lizotte said. “We needed two points tonight, and I think it showed with our effort.”

The Senators grabbed a 1-0 lead on a marker from Dominik Kubalik  at 7:33 of the opening stanza.

The score remained 1-0 to Ottawa until the Kings replied with a strike by Quinton Byfield  at 13:24 of the middle frame., tying the game, 1-1.

“I think we needed ‘Talbs’ for the first 40 minutes,” Hiller said. “We didn’t play well. He kept us in it. Not just the obvious with that incredible save he made, but there was five or six before that. He gave us a chance to get our legs underneath us.”

Ottawa took just 15 seconds to respond with a goal by Brady Tkachuk for a 2-1 lead to the Senators.

“You just want to bounce back quickly,” Ottawa coach Jacques Martin said. “You don’t control what the other team does. It was a great save, it was a great play. I thought we rebounded well after that.”

Ottawa dropped to 25-32-4 off their sixth straight loss.

“I think we were just happy the way we played overall tonight,” Batherson said. “For us to come out on a back-to-back and put an effort like that and get a point, we’ll take it.”

Pierre-Luc Dubois got the Kings even, 2-2, midway through the third period, scoring on a delayed penalty call.

LA took a 3-2 lead on a marker form Jacob Moverare  at 11:46, scoring off a deflection.

“It’s going to be a cool memory to look back to one day,” Moverare said.

Joonas Korpisalo made 31 saves  in the loss.
