Kings drop OT decision to Hurricanes in Raleigh LA yacks up three-goal lead in the third, loses in OT

In Raleigh, the Los Angeles Kings coughed up a 4-1 lead in the third period and lost to the Hurricanes, 5-4, in extra time on Tuesday night.“It was a great third [period],” Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “Give them credit for not packing it in. It’s 4-1 going into the third, not playing very well. We decided to put a good effort up and got rewarded.”

Sebastian Aho capped a four-goal rally by the Canes whit the game-winner in the extra session.

“Obviously a huge goal by [Stastny] at first, then I felt like Staal’s line got us going,” Aho said. “The rest of us kind of followed. Huge goal by [Teravainen] on the power play, and obviously a good OT.”

Frederik Andersen made 17 saves in the Carolina win.

Paul Stastny, Jordan Staal and Teuvo Teravainen scored in the third period to rally the Canes back from the three-goal deficit and force extra time.

The Hurricanes improved to 33-9-8 off their sixth straight win.

“We knew they were going to have a push. We thought we could handle it,” Kings coach Todd McLellan said. “I actually thought we didn’t play a terrible period. The first two periods, I thought we played an outstanding game.”

Brent Burns scored in the first period to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead

“These guys need a break,” Brind’Amour said. “You see how hard they play all year. That could have easily been, we’ve had a good run, we’ve done pretty well. They gave it what they had. I appreciate that about the group.”

The Kings dropped to 28-18-7.

LA responded with a four-goal middle frame.

Adrian Kempe hit for a double in the second period, his first tied the game, 1-1.

Kevin Fiala and Kempe then scored for a 3-1 lead.

“We were just playing hard, playing the way the coaches wanted us to play,” LA’s Drew Doughty said. “We were making good passes, scoring big goals. That was a really good second period by us, but I guess the bottom line is we just messed it up in the third.”

Anze Kopitar completed the four-goal outburst with a power play marker for a 4-1 lead headed to the third.

Pheonix Copley made 25 saves in the Kings loss.
