Kings down Red Wings, 5-4, in OT

In Detroit, Phillip Danault‘s second goal of the game came in extra time on Monday to give the Los Angeles Kings a 5-4 win over the Red Wings on Monday.

“We still have a lot of work to do, but we’re getting better,” Danault said. “We know the last two games were unacceptable defensively (10 goals allowed), and tonight was a step in the right direction.”

The Red Wings trailed 3-4 in the third when Oskar Sundqvist scored with 41 seconds left in the game to force the extra session.

“We have a lot of experienced players on this team, and they did a great job of calming everyone down for overtime,” Kings coach Todd McLellan said. “Everyone wanted to win it for [Arvidsson], but we can’t put ourselves in that situation very often.”

Jonathan Quick made 29 saves in the Kings win.

“I thought we looked more like the team we should be,” McLellan said. “We had some strange circumstances, but we had a good effort and got two points.”

David Perron hit for a double for the Red Wings.

Anze Kopitar also scored for the Kings.

“We were never able to get any momentum off our goals,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “There were three times we scored where they seemed to score immediately after, but getting a point after trailing in the third period is a good sign.”

Adam Erne also scored for the Red Wings, his goal gave Detroit a 1-0 lead.

“I think was a good first weekend for us, the way we played,” Detroit’s Dylan Larkin said. “We haven’t been perfect through the first three games, but I like the way we approached every period.”

Ville Husso made 31 saves in the Detroit loss.
