Kesler sends Ducks past Devils, 3-2

In Anaheim Thursday, with under four minutes to go in regulation Ryan Kesler snapped a backhand shot past the New Jersey Devils’ Cory Schneider for a 3-2 lead.

The Ducks held off the Devils to earn the victory.

“We started slow again this year but we keep getting better, and that’s all we have to continue to do,” Kesler said on the Ducks website.Anaheim Ducks

Jonathan Bernier made 27 stops to get the win for Anaheim.

“I think when you have two goalies [including John Gibson] playing well, you’re pushing each other. You want to get the net as much as possible, so obviously you have to make those saves at the right time, and I think it’s a healthy competition,”  Bernier said after the win.

In a busy second period, both clubs scored twice to set up Kesler’s heroics in the third.

Rickard Rakell  and Jakob Silfverberg scored for the Ducks.

The Devils got goals from Devante Smith-Pelly and Kyle Quincey.

Schneider had 20 saves in the loss.

“It’s tough to not get the result because that’s what we’re here for, to get points. The way we played [Thursday], we should have at least gotten one point, but it happens and we can’t be discouraged,” Schneider said. “When they scored those two goals late in the second, we didn’t wilt. We came out and played a really good third period, so it’s tough right now, but if we keep playing this way, we’ll be rewarded more often.”
