OULU, FINLAND – Breaking news from the Finnish SM-Liiga. Karpat have released its Canadian forward Martin St.Pierre and announced that the team has agreed to terms with Czech defence man Jan Snopek. Snopek’s contract covers the remainder of the 2010-2011 season. Martin St.Pierre, who was recently listed as one of the worst import signings of the year, tallied just eight goals and six assists for Karpat in 27 games. The Canadian who had a meeting with the teams’ directors earlier this week, will carry on his season in Austria with Salzburg. Snopek will join Karpat from Czech Extra Liga team Ceske Budejovice. Snopek has spent the majority of his professional career in the Czech Extra Liga and won the Czech National Championship with Pardubice in 2005. He is expected to be game ready on Saturday against TPS. “I believe that Snopek is what we need for the team at the moment,” said Karpat coach Hannu Aravirta in a statement. “We can really use Snopek’s experience and as a right handed player he will be ideal for special situations, such as power play and creating break out opportunities for our team.”
Espoo Blues have also released former NHL’er Stephane Veilleux. In his time with the Blues Veilleux scored only one goal and posted six assists. He had been named on the list of ‘Worste import signing of the year’ earlier in the week, a list published by the Finnish tabloid magazine Llta-Sanomat. Contact Janne.Virtanen@prohockeynews.com
