Play with fire, and at some point you will get burned.
In Vancouver on Tuesday night, the New York Rangers played with fire and felt the sting of karma in a 3-2 loss to the Canucks, in overtime.
The Rangers held a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes and then forgot the game was 60 minutes long.
“We made a couple mistakes, they obviously had a push back and scored on their chances in the third,” the Rangers’ Mika Zibanejad said. “I thought we did a pretty god job up until the third, but it wasn’t a full 60 minutes and that’s why we sit here with the loss.”
Zibanejad and Artemi Panarin each scored their second goals of the season in the middle frame for a 2-0 lead.
Both goals were on the power play and the two goals were separated by three straight penalty kills by New York.
“[The penalty kill] was awesome,” New York head coach Gerard Gallant said. “They did a great job. Back-to-back-to-back, and that was huge for our group.”
New York dropped to 6-2-2.
Thatcher Demko made 23 saves for for the Vancouver win.
J.T. Miller scored twice for the Canucks, including the OT winner.
“It’s just important we stay with it because nobody’s going to get this tide to turn faster than we are,” Miller said. “It’s just nice to see a couple of pucks go in for our group, and hopefully the flood gates kind of open up a little bit for us.”
Vasily Podkolzin‘s third period goal tied the game, 2-2.
Igor Shesterkin made 33 saves in the Rangers loss.
