In Glendale, William Karlsson wrought heartache for the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday afternoon when scored with just 43 seconds in regulation to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 1-0 win.
“You’re approaching it like a playoff series, you’re trying to bank as many points as possible,” Vegas head coach Peter DeBoer said. “It’s a swing night where either the series is 2-2 or 3-1, and 3-1 is a big swing for us.”
Marc-Andre Fleury made 16 saves for the shut out.
“You just kind of play through until there’s a whistle, and obviously [there] wasn’t one,” Vegas’ Jonathan Marchessault said. “I saw `Tuchy’ have the puck around the red-line area and he tried to pass to me but it hit something. I just kept going and it didn’t even cross my mind that it was going to be icing. Everybody stopped playing a little bit, but I just kept my head up and I saw Will alone and he was able to bury it.”
Vegas improved to 5-1-0.
“I saw `March’ didn’t give up on the play, we got the bounce, he got the puck and I was kind of clear in front of the net,” Karlsson said of the game-winning play. “The name of
the game was patience. We had a lot of chances and, sooner or later, they will go in.”
The Coyotes dropped to 2-3-1.
“The guys have been great in front, making my job a little easier, blocking a lot of shots and clearing in front of me,” Fleury said. “We’ve scored some big goals, and this was a battle to the end.”
Darcy Kuemper made 26 saves in the hard luck loss.
“It was a little bit tighter of a game, guys were really working and playing tight,” Kuemper said. “An unfortunate bounce at the end, or otherwise it would have gone to overtime.”
