Kane leads Blackhawks past Columbus

In Columbus, Patrick Kane potted his 10th of the season to break a scoreless tie in the third period to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 2-0 win over the Blue Jackets on Thursday night.

“It was a big goal for the team, so I think more important than anything, it gave us the lead and gave us the chance to get two points,” Kane said.

Malcolm Subban made 26 saves to get the shutout.

“It shows we can win in different ways,” Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton said. “Obviously, you love to score goals, but sometimes you can’t control that.

“But how we defend and our commitment to the details and the work ethic away from the puck, that that we can control, so obviously as a coach you feel better about tonight’s performance as far as that. We were really solid away from the puck.”

Columbus dropped to 8-8-5.

“In a game like today where it’s just a grind, you’ve got find a way, dig a little deeper to get that next one and we just couldn’t come up with it,” the Blue Jackets’ Nick Foligno said.

Carl Soderberg added an empty-net goal with 50 seconds left to ice the win.

“It was obviously a pretty tight game, both teams were grinding it out, trying to play tight,” Kane said. “It was nice to get a break and be able to capitalize on it.”

Chicago improved to 11-6-4.

“I feel like I’ve never been good at getting shutouts in every league I’ve been, so I cherish them when I get them,” Subban said. “But I think it’s the result of our team play. It felt like a playoff game, and usually those are really tight.”

Joonas Korpisalo made 25 saves in the loss.

“We don’t find a way to score and they do. One shot beats us,” Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella said. “We play a good first period, they play a good second period, and it comes down to the third period. They score a goal and we don’t.”
