K-Wings reel in Walleye Kalamazoo defeats Toledo 4-2

TOLEDO – Scoring two goals in the opening period, the Kalamazoo Wings jumped ahead and never looked back in a 4-2 victory over the Toledo Walleye at the Huntington Center.

Taking advantage of their first power-play of the night, Sam Ftorek (3rd) gave the K-Wings 2:21 into the first period with a slap shot from the left circle.

Using a great individual effort, Jean Bourbeau (7th) put the K-Wings ahead 2-0 midway in the period. Immediately after winning a face-off in the Toledo zone, Bourbeau scored unassisted on a backhander. kalamazoo-wings-logo

Despite either team scoring in the second period, the K-Wings spent a majority of the 20 minutes in the Walleye zone outshooting Toledo 10-3. Before the start of the period, the Walleye replaced goaltender Jeff Lerg with Neil Conway.

Building off a post-to-post save by Conway early in the third period, the Walleye cut the K-Wings lead to a single goal 5:02 into the third with an end-to-end tally from Kyle Bonis (25th).

Gergo Nagy (9th) reclaimed a two-goal cushion for the K-Wing by netting his ninth goal from the high slot off a pass from Michael Neal. Neal extended his point streak in seven games with the assists, while Matt Caria pushed his point streak to three games with a secondary helper.

Tacking on an empty-netter in the final three minutes, Lane Scheidl (11th) notched his third goal in as many games to put the game out of reach.

Keeping their goaltender pulled for an extra skater and on a power-play, Toledo closed the gap to two goals with a tally from Cody Lampl (5th).

Joel Martin made 24 saves to record his 20th victory of the season.
